Trojans Deliver Strong Performances at Blackbear Invitational

The Hazel Green High School Track Team competed on Saturday, April 18th at the Blackbear Invitational, with 49 athletes competing across 27 events. The boys finished 5th out of 12 teams, while the girls placed 3rd out of 10 teams.

Despite a busy schedule and athletes spread across multiple events, the Trojans showed depth and resilience, highlighted by event wins, school records, and a large number of personal bests.

Sprints

The sprint group showed strong depth, with several athletes competing in multiple events and continuing to improve.

In the boys 100 Meter Dash (5 athletes), Timothy Pruitt led the team, placing 6th (11.14) and scoring points. He was joined by Joseph Henderson, Myles Pope, Caiden Sedlacek, and Montavious Keith. Henderson added a 7th place finish (PR) to score, while Pope (11.49, 0.8%) and Keith (13.04) both set PRs.

In the girls 100 Meter Dash (5 athletes), Paityn Banks placed 3rd (12.31), setting a PR (2.0%) and scoring points. She was joined by Madison Grantham, Anna Zuurbier, Alyssa Maggipinto, and Cailyn Borges, with four athletes earning PRs, led by Grantham’s 13.74 (2.3% improvement).

In the boys 200 Meter Dash (5 athletes), Caiden Sedlacek placed 5th (23.46), setting a PR and scoring. He was joined by Donovan Lanier, Joseph Henderson, Brycen Prather, and Montavious Keith, with Henderson (25.11, 0.2%) and Keith (28.19) adding PRs.

In the girls 200 Meter Dash (5 athletes), Juliette Douglas led the team with a 3rd place finish (27.24), scoring points. She was joined by Ifunanya Ukeje, Madison Grantham, Jayda Morales, and Cailyn Borges, with Grantham setting another PR (29.17, 2.4%).

In the boys 400 Meter Dash (5 athletes), Donovan Lanier placed 7th (55.43), scoring points. He was joined by Tyson Moon, David Jones, Brycen Prather, and Bradford Willis, with Prather (1:00.50, 14.7%) and Moon (57.58, 1.3%) setting PRs.

In the girls 400 Meter Dash (4 athletes), Sloan Williams led the way, placing 6th (1:02.00) and scoring. She was joined by Juliette Douglas, Jayda Morales, and Cailyn Borges, with Douglas placing 8th (PR) to score. Williams and Douglas both contributed across multiple events.

Distance

The distance group continued to show steady progress, with several athletes competing in multiple races and relays.

In the girls 3200 Meter Run (1 athlete), Danielle Vibbert placed 2nd (13:27.39), scoring points.

In the boys 800 Meter Run (3 athletes), Liam Bush led the team, placing 4th (2:14.63), setting a PR (2.5%) and scoring. He was joined by Michaelray Tate and Nate Crabtree, with Tate also doubling back later in the 1600.

In the girls 800 Meter Run (4 athletes), Savannah Foreman placed 3rd (2:33.18), setting a PR (5.2%) and scoring. She was joined by Sakura Hollingsed, Miranda Bush, and Natalie Moyers, with Hollingsed placing 5th, Bush placing 7th (PR), and Moyers placing 8th to score—giving the Trojans four scorers and multiple athletes doubling in distance events and relays.

In the boys 1600 Meter Run (1 athlete), Michaelray Tate competed in his second event of the day, running 6:01.18.

In the girls 1600 Meter Run (2 athletes), Sakura Hollingsed placed 6th (6:09.52), scoring points, and Avelyn Jephson added an 8th place finish to score—both contributing across multiple events.

Hurdles

The hurdle group had a dominant day, accounting for multiple wins and school records.

In the girls 100 Meter Hurdles (1 athlete), Paityn Banks won in 14.47, setting a new school record and a PR (0.8%).

In the boys 110 Meter Hurdles (1 athlete), Myles Pope claimed the win in 14.72, setting a PR (0.9%).

In the boys 300 Meter Hurdles (2 athletes), Zachary Morris placed 4th (45.23), setting a PR (4.0%) and scoring, while Bryce Douglas placed 7th to score.

In the girls 300 Meter Hurdles (1 athlete), Paityn Banks completed the sweep, winning in 44.61 and setting another school record and PR (0.6%), capping off a remarkable multi-event performance.

Relays

The relay teams added valuable points, with several distance athletes doubling back to contribute.

In the girls 4x800 Meter Relay, the team placed 2nd (11:23.15), scoring 8 points.

In the boys 4x100 Meter Relay, the team placed 4th (44.83), scoring 5 points.

In the girls 4x100 Meter Relay, the team placed 6th (56.09), scoring 3 points.

Throws

The throws group showed strong improvement, highlighted by multiple PRs.

In the boys Javelin (3 athletes), Gauge Peel placed 4th (122-10), setting a PR (8.5%) and scoring. He was joined by Tyson Moon and Henry Calixte, with both athletes posting major PRs—Calixte (83-4.5, 38.8%) and Moon (107-9, 6.4%). Moon also competed in the 400 earlier in the meet.

In the girls Javelin (1 athlete), London Boedeker delivered a strong performance, placing 2nd (93-0) and scoring points.

In the boys Shot Put (5 athletes), Timothy Locke led the group (38-6), joined by Gauge Peel, Luke Davault, MaKaias Carr, and Troy Lewis, with Peel competing in multiple throwing events.

In the girls Shot Put (3 athletes), Laila Crain placed 8th (25-9.50), scoring points. She was joined by Jayla Williams and Morgan Scruggs, with Williams setting a PR (22-8, 1.1%).

In the boys Discus (2 athletes), Troy Lewis led the team (100-9), joined by Gavin Locke.

Jumps

The jumps squad produced an event win and several scoring performances, with multiple athletes competing across events.

In the boys High Jump (2 athletes), Milton Sledge III won with a clearance of 6-0. He was joined by Elijah Mike, who placed 5th to score—both contributing in multiple jumping events.

In the boys Long Jump (3 athletes), Traveion Sanford placed 8th (19-11), setting a PR (1.3%) and scoring. He was joined by Justin Do and Bradford Willis, with Sanford also competing in other events.

In the girls Long Jump (6 athletes), Sloan Williams led the team with a 4th place finish (16-11), scoring points. She was joined by five teammates, including Jurnee Moore, who placed 8th to score, with Williams again doubling across multiple events.

In the girls Triple Jump (1 athlete), Jurnee Moore placed 5th (33-3.50), scoring points and contributing in multiple jumps.

Final Thoughts

The Trojans totaled 4 event wins, 10 podium finishes, 27 personal records, and 2 school records in another strong outing. With many athletes competing in multiple events and continuing to improve, the team showed toughness, versatility, and steady progress.

As the postseason approaches, Hazel Green continues to build momentum, with athletes gaining valuable experience and confidence heading into championship competition.
